Friday 2

So how’s the new laptop going, none of you ask. Well… in general it’s been a boon. It’s faster and more modern (obviously) with one or two odd quirks. The fingerprint sensor taking up half the space of the right-hand Shift key isn’t a great problem, and I don’t use the fingerprint sensor anyway. The webcam seems to be very good for people on the other end (I’ve only done the one interview so far). Lots and lots of disk space too.

The screen… well, I’ve said before that it would have been better to have a 14” screen inside a 13.3” body, now that we have thinner bezels. And it’s reflective which highlights fingerprints that accidentally get on there while trying to open the lid (smaller bezels means a smaller lip at the top, remember). And, it turns out, some of the bits of dust I’ve been trying to brush away don’t brush away because they’re not dust. Moral: close the lid before you sneeze.

Sunday 11

My memory is going. Not in a big, frightening way but in a small, forgetting to pay attention sort of way.

I put some rice in a pan, then went to get something to pour water in in order to cover it. While searching for a glass I got distracted by the TV and forgot about the pan. Result: lots of burnt rice stuck to the bottom of the pan, followed by 10 minutes of scraping.

It doesn’t help that the kitchen in this flat is a separate room. My rule these days is: if I can smell something cooking it’s already burned.

Tuesday 13

The pubs are open. The pavements of Leeds are now covered with tables, making it impossible to keep 2 metres away from everyone. Not that anyone cares about being 2 metres from other people except me and a few others. It’s proper scary how quickly people forget what’s happened the last 12 months in the drive for ‘normality’.

Saturday 24

Haircut day!

My hair hasn’t been this long since… well, since last year. That was 17 weeks, this time it’s 19 weeks but I must have started from a different point as it was very wavy at the back and well over my ears, almost down to my lobes.

And it was nice to talk with someone, plus the physical contact (even if it was just my hair). Grade 6 at the back and scissor trim elsewhere and it looks a lot better. Feels a lot better too. Back in three weeks for a further trim as I thought I’d take it down in stages. If anyone ever phones me again I’ll be able to hear them clearly instead of through the rustle of grey hair.

Friday 30

The end of an odd month. Did something that will see the light of day next week. Wrote three blog posts, two about the European Super League… the one with communications learning outcomes being the one no-one read, which shows how irrelevant I’ve become.

The weather is chilly and I have lots of chilli in the freezer. April ending the way it started. May will undoubtedly bring more of the same (not the chilli, I hope), which is the depressing part. Oh, for something different to happen!
