I get the odd request – at my work email – to be someone’s friend on Facebook. So I took the plunge and registered my home email address and created a profile.

And then what? Well, you can find your friends and add them to your friends list; but it isn’t the most obvious thing in the world. Facebook knows I work at Metro, but if I look for other Metroids, they all seem to be overseas, not West Yorkshire. TASC graduates are in short supply too, and you can’t search lists of Leeds Uni or Leeds Poly people without having a valid address for one of them. Bizarre.

So what’s Facebook for? How is it better than having your own web site (biased there)? How much longer will people maintain their profiles before trying something else?
